Organ Donation Campaign: Gift of Life

As per the Library of Parliament’s research publications program, Canada ranked 14th among 70 countries for actual deceased organ donor rate and a little better in live organ Donation rate in 2019.

In 2018, 223 Canadians died waiting for an organ, and at the end of the year, 4,351 people were awaiting an organ transplant. As long as there is a gap between the number of organs available for transplantation and the number of organs needed, it will be necessary to explore options for increasing both the deceased and living donor rates. Just as other social activities have been impacted by COVID, organ donation campaigns also have suffered and the rate of registration per month have dropped considerably in BC and Canada.

Annually, there are still thousands of Canadians on the waiting list for an organ transplant, and hundreds die every year while waiting for an organ to become available. There is no age limit to who can be an organ donor, in fact, the oldest organ donation in Canada was 92 years old. There are many questions that donors always and experts provide answers to them all but one thing that we can share for now is that in BC, at all times throughout the donation process, a donor is treated with utmost respect. After the surgical recovery of the organs, the donor's body is released back to to the family.

BC Organ transplant Society just as other such societies in different provinces of Canada are saving lives and offering hope with compassion, collaboration and innovation, through organ donation, transplant and research. BC Transplant oversees all aspects of organ donation and transplant across BC and manages the BC Organ Donor Registry.
