Saving lives: Road safety campaign
Dear friends,
Do you know that on Sept. 29, 2020 a 74-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in Vancouver and another senior, a 70 years old man was struck by a vehicle and killed on scene at the 12600-block of 104th Avenue in the Surrey on Nov 3rd, 2020?
Seniors and young kids account for a higher number of all pedestrian deaths. Recent deaths of our seniors, have shook us all. To respond and to celebrate the Guru Nanak Dev’s gurupurab, through one of our project this year, we have committed to raise awareness in drivers and pedestrians. Our Global Village has been running a safety awareness campaign since Nov 30, 2020. To increase road safety awareness amongst our working / student population who walk and/ or take transit as well as to encourage safe outdoor activities for our seniors, when many covid 19 related restrictions are isolating them as well as limiting their physical activities, we are distributing free high visibility reflector vests.
Any member of our vulnerable road users, including seniors who need a reflector vest and / or masks ( to wear over a turban) can call us (Jatinder Bhatia at (778) 848-1287). Our dedicated team of volunteers will arrange for either a pickup or drop off within Surrey or cities around it. We are committed to distributing these vests through public events held around train and bus stands, as well as parks. So far we have distributed hundreds of vests but many more hundreds must reach to those in need. Depending on community's donations, we will continue to provide this service until the end of March and then rerun it from Oct to Dec 31, 2021 again.
We thank you for your generosity and wisdom as we have been able to serve the community for over seven years only with your generous support, wise guidance and continuous encouragement. To contribute towards this initiative or other community serving initiatives, please get in touch with us.
